text update: the good, the bad, the miscellaneous.
1. if you ever have the ability to manage a Facebook page that gets a ton of hits, its really fun to go and check out the insights feature they provide you. they give you a virality rating of your post, which is some ratio of engaged users vs. reached users or some crap. that’s all fine and dandy…
but when the line graph shows me that barely two weeks ago, our posts were reaching a mere 246 people per post, and now we reach 4,400 people per post.. and climbing… well now that’s pretty darn cool.
2. if you want to learn everything about anything, the internetz is a beautiful thing. already up to my neck in articles about mixing, mastering, and things of the sort in Cubase. did i tell you i’m gonna be producing/engineering the next hots release, tumblr? oh, well now you know. i’m pretty stoked about it. i’m ready to make a LOT of mistakes and release a quality recording come hell or high water.
on a side note, i love the way some people write about things they know really well. this one article on self mastering at soundonsound.com, states that mastering a vinyl record is the easiest mastering you’ll ever do, and it only takes 2 steps. naturally, i’m all “eff yea, i’m gonna learn me some cool shit”. step 1: find a really good engineer who specializes in vinyl. step 2: give him your final mix. haha. bamboozled. i guess i’ll save that lesson for when i’m watching over some wise learned man’s shoulder in the future.
3. i met some really cool people this past PRB weekend, and i caught a glimpse of what it’s like to live in music for 40 years or so. its funny, punk rock is where i cut my teeth on guitar, and though i thought i’d never be back in that area again as an artist, i must say it’s really darn fun to be a guitar player in a punk band. it’s not based on the sound, it’s based in the attitude. “fuck you, this is what my guitar sounds like.” that’s what i feel when i play. i love that. and no matter where we go sonically, that attitude will always be there, and that makes us forever punk rock. i’m okay with that.
